My Eye is Red and Itchy?

“I get an itch in my eye that is very bothersome, and it also makes my eye red. Sometimes, I can’t help but rub it, which I know does not help. My wife thinks it could be stress, but what could it be?”

Our listener to 103.3 US Country asks a detailed question about his eye. However, without examining the eye in person, this will only be guesses as to what might be the cause. I strongly advise our listener to seek eye care with their optometrist to investigate his complaint.

But in the meantime…

What could be wrong?

There’s a few possibilities that could cause an itchy red eye.

  • Allergies are known to cause itchiness. While allergies usually affect both eyes, it isn’t impossible for only one eye to be affected.

  • Sometimes an eyelash can grow the wrong way, medically known as trichiasis. This can cause irritation, itching, and redness. The offending eyelash will need to be removed to fix the problem.

  • Blephartitis can cause itchy eyes as well as redness. This is where excess crusts and flakes are produced on the eyelid margins which can affect the meibomian glands.

Again, without examining our listener’s eyes, these are a few guesses as to what might be wrong

What should he do?

Of course, he is correct to try to not rub his eye as that will make the itching worse. Rubbing causes more histamine to be released and increases the itch.

His best bet is to see his optometrist to find the source of the redness and itching so that the proper treatment can be employed.

What Our Clients Say

My annual eye exam is always an excellent experience with Dr. Danielle Dyke. The exam is always thorough, and Dr. Dyke takes the time to explain my eye health in a way I can understand. The Vision Source eye clinic is modern, clean, and the staff is very welcoming. I always feel comfortable and well-cared for at my appointment. I highly recommend Dr. Dyke and Vision Source!

Dr. Schauer did an amazing job getting my eye infection cleared up. As I sat in my room waiting my turn, because I had a last minute appointment, I could hear her working with a family next door that had young kids.

Whenever I have had eye issues, they have made efforts to get me in asap. Which I really appreciate. I have had Dr. Aberle and Dr. Dyke and they are both excellent. Recently, I saw Dr. Aberle for a chronic eye problem in one eye & he fixed the problem. Honestly, it felt like a miracle. The office staff is also very pleasant to deal with.

I've literally been a lifelong customer since 5th grade when it was Dr. Little! Dr. Schauer has taken over since Dr. Little retired. It's always a good, friendly experience with all of the staff there. I've never had a bad experience.

Deborah C.

I was greeted by the front desk very efficiently. The person who did the first part of my history and did the testing like the little spritz in my eyes, etc, was very good. I really like my eye doctor, I feel that I get all my questions answered as well as she explains what she is seeing when she is examining my eyes.
